Virco and Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
Virco is pleased to announce its recent acquisition of LAB TRACKER™ HIV [Press Release], an electronic medical record (EMR) system used by a number of physicians in the US, as a new platform in the global market for bioinformatic tools that enhance patient care.
The acquisition of LAB TRACKER™ HIV will strengthen Virco’s portfolio of services in electronically based bioinformatic tools currently provided through its vircoNET™ and virco®TYPE HIV resistance interpretation system and through its US partnership with SmartGene. [See newsflash].

EMR systems are an important part of future healthcare provision, as acknowledged by the recent HITECH Act of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009, providing incentives for EMR adoption by US physicians. EMR systems are also being adopted throughout Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific as a way to manage the increasing complexity of healthcare decisions and provision for the individual and whole cohorts of patients.

Integration of EMR systems into healthcare is complex and requires new levels of communications between users and systems: the physician and patient, the laboratories and other clinical diagnostic services that provide clinical data, hospital or healthcare unit administration, healthcare payers (e.g. insurers) and technology vendors. It is important, therefore, that such systems meet the needs of physicians in treating their patients and enhancing care and do not add unnecessary complexity.
- As a provider of solutions in HIV resistance interpretation worldwide over the past 14 years, Virco is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of HIV treating physicians in monitoring their patients care and to develop LAB TRACKER™ HIV into the EMR of choice in supporting this care
- LAB TRACKER™ HIV is a disease-specific EMR for treating HIV physicians, and has had a long and established history of serving their needs. It was designed in collaboration with treating physicians to meet their needs, and Virco is committed to maintaining this relationship as we develop the product in the future.

- LAB TRACKER™ HIV is a scalable platform for integrating medical data from pharmacies, labs, clinics, SOAP [Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan] notes, radiology and record archives, and in every format, from Microsoft Excel and Access programs to mainframe applications with HL-7 connectivity. The software can be installed on existing PCs, networks, or laptops running on the Windows® operating system*, and is compatible with previously installed applications.

Virco is committed to placing LAB TRACKER™ HIV at the heart of its product offering, and to integrating it with virco®TYPE HIV-1 and partner applications, to provide a complete suite of HIV/AIDS EMR and drug resistance tools in the future.
HIV/AIDS as a disease area is an example of the need to manage complexity and considerable data in managing patient care, and by providing comprehensive, integrated tools Virco believes outcomes may be enhanced positively.
Virco is committed to meeting its mission and we believe that providing an EMR product meets unmet need and supports innovation in treating HIV/AIDS and potentially for other infectious diseases and therapeutic categories in the future. We look forward to collaborating with existing and future customers in doing so.
